Signups are ongoing for the second annual Tree House Primal Rush Obstacle Course Race, which will take place in Jefferson on Saturday, Aug. 16.

Primal Rush Chairman Chance Bentley said 60-70 people have signed up so far for this year’s race, which will entail over four miles of "water, dirt, mud and obstacles to trip you up at every turn," according to the event’s flier.

Bentley said this year they’ve added almost another mile to last year’s distance, with several new obstacles so people won’t know what to expect.

The race takes place in "waves," Bentley said, with the first, competitive wave beginning at 8 a.m. Following the first wave, the rest will be non-competitive and will begin every 15 minutes until 10:45 a.m. Bentley said runners can select a specific wave time when they register.

All proceeds from the race go to benefit The Tree House, a nonprofit organization whose mission is "to strengthen communities by reducing the impact and occurrence of child abuse through counseling, educating, supporting and nurturing children and families in Barrow, Banks and Jackson counties," according to the flier.

Bentley said last year’s race brought in $17,400 from sponsors and cleared over $17,000 to benefit The Tree House.

The Primal Rush team hopes to double the 250 runners who participated in last year’s race, Bentley said. Though right now only 60-70 have signed up, Bentley said that doesn’t worry her because last year, most of the runners signed up right before the race.

Bentley said several teams dressed up last year, including one team of 10-15 people who came outfitted in hillbilly gear, with "cut-offs and flannel shirts."

"They had the best time," Bentley said. "It was all about fun for them."

The race also features a children’s run, which generated enough interest last year for the Primal Rush team to decide to lower the age limit, which had been 6 years old and up.

This year, the children’s run will include three different waves, with children ages 3-5 running on their own course. The other two waves will be for children ages 6-9 and 10-12. The race location is Crow’s Lake, at 155 Crow’s Lake Dr. in Jefferson. Registration prices before the race day are $68 for runners ages 13 years and up (which increases to $75 on the day of the race), $15 for ages 3 years to 12 years and $35 for students, law enforcement, fire department and EMTs.
