AMVETS to hold events to help fund suicide prevention

POSTED: June 19, 2014 9:13 a.m.

A Barrow County motorcycle ride and concert this weekend is taking aim at lowering alarming suicide rates for those serving in the military.

AMVETS Riders Chapter 12 is hosting Defenders of Freedom 5 Saturday. The event that begins in Winder and concludes in Auburn will raise money for a post traumatic stress disorder and suicide prevention program at the local guard armory.

At least 20 percent of veterans that have served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have suffered from depression or PTSD, and around 50 percent of people suffering PTSD do not seek treatment.

A 2013 report by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that 22 veterans commit suicide each day.

People at the Defenders of Freedom 5 will be able to make donations for the suicide prevention program and riders can register for $25 (passengers free). The motorcycle ride starts outside the Barrow County Courthouse at 652 Barrow Park Drive NW in Winder.

A free concert will be take place around noon in Auburn where a complementary lunch will be provided for the riders. The concert is open to anyone.

Raffle prizes include a Springfield 1911 gun or $500 cash. A flat screen TV will be given away as a door prize.

For more information call 678-227-0580 or email Registration begins at 9 a.m. The ride starts 11 a.m.
