Peace Place to hold 5K to End Domestic Violence

POSTED: June 9, 2014 4:14 p.m.

The goal of a 5k race later this month is to have fun while helping out a worthy cause.

The Peace Place 5K to End Domestic Violence will take place Saturday (June 14) at Fort Yargo State Park.
Proceeds from the event will help domestic violence survivors and raise awareness on an issue that is prevalent across the nation.

“It's a fun atmosphere with a very diverse group of runners and walkers—they come from all ages and ability levels,” Peace Place Interim Director Nikki Tobias said. “We hear positive reviews from serious/competitive runners to those walking in our 5K with their family and friends and everyone in between.”

Among the services Peace Place provides are emergency shelter, transitional housing, support groups for victims of abuse and outreach.

In 2013 there were 4,612 domestic violence victims who requested moving into a shelter but were not able to because of lack of space, according to the Georgia Commission on Family Violence.

Runners and walkers can register at active.com or by printing a registration form at www.peaceplaceinc.org. Registration for the event, including a t-shirt, is $25 before Monday and $30 after Monday and on the day of the event.
The trail run/walk starts at 9 a.m. and packet pick-up begins at 7:45 a.m.  Dogs are welcome.

Platinum sponsors for the event are Walton and First Baptist Church Jefferson.  Winder Auto Parts (NAPA) is a gold sponsor.
