Statham holds annual sunflower festival in downtown

Statham held its annual Sunflower Festival last Saturday in downtown. There was a variety of attractions and events that were enjoyed by hundreds of attendees. A plethora of food vendors kept the festival goers sated and hydrated on the warm and breezy day. Numerous craftsmen had their handmade goods on hand for sale, and several clubs and organizations were pitching for new members. For the more mechanical types there was an old car and tractor show, live shows and exhibitions included musicians and dancers of all genres.

Winder's 5th annual Jug Tavern Festival and BBQ Cook-off was a huge success, according to DDA organizers. There were carnival rides, a mechanical bull, car show and craft vendors. The food available ranged from BBQ as far as the eyes could see, to pizza and deep fried Oreos. Saturday night offered bands and a firework display.

Founder's Day: Barrow buries time capsule to celebrate 100 years

As part of its Founder's Day festivities, the Barrow County Historical Society buried a time capsule in front of the historic courthouse to be opened in 2114. A number of community members attended, from local students to Winder Mayor David Maynard and BOC Chairman Pat Graham. Along with the ceremony, reenactors from Fort Yargo displayed 1914-era tools and methods.

Holsenbeck holds annual character parade

Holsenbeck holds annual character parade

Holsenbeck Elementary was a compilation of stories Friday morning as students dressed up as their favorite book characters and held a parade, complete with drum line, fire truck and police car. Though all students were encouraged to dress up, the 363 students who marched in the parade were the ones who read 10 or more books over the summer. The Winder-Barrow High School cheerleaders and senior football players also marched in the event. Parents and families were invited to stay after the parade for reading engagement activities in the classrooms.
