An animal hospital in Statham is asking for donations so that a puppy in their care can get a needed operation.

Tesla is a 5-month old Shih-Tzu puppy who was first brought to the Four Paws Animal Hospital by her previous owners after being electrocuted at home after chewing on an electrical cord.

"We did initial up-front care," said animal hospital employee Maddie. "But her owners couldn’t afford her care."

So the owners brought the fluffy black-and-white puppy back to the hospital and surrendered her to the staff, which have been caring for Tesla ever since.

"We don’t do this under normal circumstances," Maddie said, "but she’s just a puppy and we couldn’t let her go.

"She’s happy, cute as can be, eats like a horse. She’s the sweetest thing ever."

So the hospital has provided pain medication and even taken her to the University of Georgia Veterinary Clinic.

It was there that they discovered that a surgery to repair more of the damage done by the electrocution, including a hole that has developed in the roof of her mouth, would cost roughly $3,000.

To date they have raised nearly half of that, but they’re trying to get the rest quickly in order to get the procedure done in the coming week.

"If the hole gets any worse we would have to put a feeding tube in," he said. "(The UGA veterinarians) can take out all of the stuff that’s decayed, piece it back together and hopefully she’ll be able to live as normal a life as she can."

To help fund the cost of Tesla’s surgery interested donors can call the hospital at 770-725-7387 and donate by credit card over the phone, come in and put cash in the donation jar or use Paypal through the donation site
