Wildcat tennis has strong start against Cedar Shoals

POSTED: February 26, 2014 12:00 p.m.

Apalachee's varsity men's tennis team defeated the Cedar Shoals Jaguars 3-2 at the Athens Tennis Center in a non-region contest Tuesday afternoon.

"I think we've got a lot of people back. We are missing one half of our number one doubles team, since James Alexander graduated," varsity men's tennis coach Dan Woschitz explained.

"We've got four experienced players who did a good job playing varsity last year," Woschitz added. "We'll be as good as we've been in a long time.

"I think we can be competitive in the top half of the region."

The first Wildcat win came in the number one doubles as the team of Hunter Wagler and Trey Hayes won 6-3, 6-2.

The number two singles representative Rob Thompson defeated his opponent 6-3, 7-5 to earn Apalachee their second win of the afternoon against the Jaguars.

The hero of the day, though, was freshman Chandler Haygen who captured his first varsity win in his first ever varsity match as the number three singles player for the Wildcats.

Apalachee will take on Heritage tomorrow at the Rockdale Tennis Center, which will be the Wildcats' first region match.

Although Cedar Shoals is in Apalachee's region, the Wildcats opted to schedule the Jaguars for an early season match, and the two teams agreed that it would not count as a region meeting.

The two teams will meet agian next Thursday.

"We'll see how much we can improve in a week and a half," Woschitz noted.
