Advance voting starts for runoff races

POSTED: June 29, 2014 12:00 p.m.

Barrow residents will soon have the opportunity to help decide a few more election races.

Advance voting for the primary runoffs begins Monday and runs until July 18. Residents can vote Monday–Friday, from 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. each day. No voting on Friday, July 4, noted Barrow elections supervisor Monica Franklin.

Advance Voting takes place in the Barrow County Board of Elections and Registration office located at 233 E. Broad Street.

Franklin also reminds voters in the 016 precinct that the Bethlehem Church polling location was relocated for the Primary and Primary Runoff to the Barrow County Leisure Services Center at 175 Second St. in Winder. Voting day for the runoff is July 22.

For those who voted in the Republican primary, there are a number of races still to be decided via a runoff.

Two board of education districts will be decided then, including District 1, where incumbent Randall Holland won 46 percent of the vote in the primary and top challenger Debi Krause grabbed 32 percent. The winner will face Democrat Betty Kinney in the November general election.

In District 4, incumbent Will Dunn, who grabbed 40 percent of the vote in the primary, will face top challenger Michael Shelley, who took 33 percent.

The Republican nominees for the U.S. Senate races between David Perdue and Jack Kingston, and House of Representatives District 10 with Mike Collins and Jody Hice will also be decided July 22.

The Kingston and Perdue winner will face Democrat Michelle Nunn in November in what polls project to be a closely contested race. Athens Attorney Ken Dious will challenge the winner of Hice and Collins.
