BRMC patients affected by data breach

Social security numbers hacked from parent company CHS

POSTED: August 20, 2014 1:45 p.m.

A number of Barrow Regional Medical Center patients are among those affected by a massive data breach of Community Health Systems by alleged international hackers.

The parent company of the local hospital reported the breach Monday and is now working with federal authorities to discover who was responsible for revealing demographic data, including name, age and social security numbers, from an estimated 4.5 million patients throughout CHS’s network of 206 hospitals, according to BRMC CEO Chad Hatfield.

Hatfield said all local patients affected by the breach will receive a letter from the hospital letting them know the specifics of what happened and also provide a contact number which will enable all affected patients to receive free identity theft protection services.

The breach did not affect any financial or clinical information, Hatfield added, and the information the hackers received was likely not what they were after.

“Our computer network was the target of a very sophisticated cyber attack by a foreign organization, we believe based in China, looking for intellectual property and instead got this,” he said.

It’s the first time the company has had data hacked since it acquired BRMC and a number of other hospitals early this year, and the first time Hatfield, who has been with the company four years, knows about.

Barrow Regional Medical Center, along with nearby Clearview Regional Medical Center in Monroe, were two of the many former HMA hospitals acquired by CHS in a deal that was finished in early February.
