A Winder man is being sought in connection with a possible CraigsList scam in which at least three people have put money down on cars the suspect claimed belonged to him.

A representative from Honda Mall of Georgia called the Gwinnett County Police Department on Aug. 3 in reference to the suspected scam.

Honda Mall of Georgia related that several customers have come into the dealership inquiring about two specific vehicles on their used car lot. Customers said they saw two vehicles, a 2002 Honda Accord and a 2002 Ford Ranger, for sale on a CraigsList posting with 404-808-4593 listed as the phone number for the ad.

The dealership’s representative stated at first it wasn’t a big deal, but then they learned some of the customers were actually being asked to place deposits on the vehicles belonging to the dealership. When the listed telephone number is called, a male by the name of Jeff answers the telephone and attempts to sell the cars and obtains deposit money from the interested buyers. The man was later identified as Jeff Manders of Winder.

On Aug. 4-5, three separate victims contacted the Gwinnett County Police Department alleging to have been scammed out of varying amounts of money as a result of responding to the CraigsList ad. One victim gave Jeff $800, one gave $1,000 and the other $1,800, and all victims met Jeff at Honda Mall of Georgia during the afternoon hours of Aug. 2. All three victims met with the male, gave him a deposit on the car and completed a Bill of Sale on to which he forged the name of Honda’s sales manager. Each of the victims was supposed to meet Jeff back at a later time to pay the rest of the money and take possession of the car, but police said Jeff obviously never returned.

Police say Manders went to Honda’s used car lot, obtained the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and vehicle description and then placed the car(s) on CraigsList for sale as if it were his own, and at a lower price than the dealership listed the car.

Investigators have obtained three theft by deception warrants and three forgery in the first degree warrants for Manders. In addition to the active investigation by Gwinnett County Police, Manders is also wanted on an active forgery warrant through DeKalb County as well as a probation violation warrant issued by the U.S. Marshall’s Service. Attempts have been made to locate Manders at his Barrow County home, but attempts have been unsuccessful.

Manders has been driving a dark gray 2006 Mazda Tribute with deer antlers across the back windshield, and the initials KMA are in the middle. Manders has a girlfriend who lives in Rome, and he may travel back and forth between Barrow and Floyd counties.

Any other victims dealing with Jeff Manders may contact Sgt.T.P. Conlon with the Motor Vehicle Theft Unit at 770-513-5354.
