Couple charged in injured baby case

POSTED: February 26, 2014 1:00 p.m.

A Barrow County couple is accused of injuring their three-month-old child.

Cheryl Lee Allen Holtzclaw and William Loyd Holtzclaw remain in the Barrow County Detention Center on three counts of felony first-degree cruelty to children.

The couple was arrested a week after Auburn police officers were called to their Carter Road
home shortly after midnight on Feb. 4.

Emergency responders were sent to the home because the three-month-old was in need of further medical attention for visible injuries.

The child is still undergoing medical treatment.

More details have not been released because of the ongoing investigation.

"As of this time the investigation is still open and active with the potential for additional charges pending the outcome of the continued investigation," Sgt. Diana Campbell wrote in an email.

The Holtzclaws are being held without bond. Felony first-degree cruelty to children carries a minimum sentence of five years imprisonment.

Two of the cruelty to
children charges are for
causing cruel or excessive physical or mental pain while the third count is for depriving the child of the necessary sustenance.

No court date has been set, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
