Winder approves up to $175,000 to renovate customer center

The Winder City Council voted Tuesday to authorize Mayor David Maynard to spend up to $175,000 on needed repairs and renovations to the Customer Center.

The approved amount was the result of an alteration proposed by Councilman Sonny Morris; the original proposed amount on the agenda was $100,000.

Morris proposed the increase of $75,000 because the total cost of the needed repairs is unknown and therefore could exceed $100,000.

"We wouldn’t want to slow anything down," Morris said.

Councilman Travis Singley seconded the motion, and the following council vote was unanimous.

Repairs to the Customer Center, according to the meeting agenda, are "to include but not be limited to new flooring, new roofing, new insulation, new ceiling and repair of damage due to water damage."

The City of Winder announced July 28 that the Customer Center would be closed until further notice for repairs. Customers may make payments via the following methods until the center reopens:

•Via the phone at 770-867-3106

•Drop box – 45 E Athens St. (Customer Center parking lot)

•City of Winder Annex – 23 N Jackson St. (all of your Customer Service needs)

•City of Winder Police Department – 25 E Midland Ave. (payments only)

Other expenditures voted on and approved at Tuesday’s meeting were:

•$160,000 to Gary’s Grading for the North Jackson Street – East Midland Avenue – Park Avenue Storm Water Improvements project;

•$42,000 to Po Boys Plumbing for the Candler Street Waterline Rehabilitation project; and

•$12,000 to Johnson, Spellman & Associates for electrical and mechanical engineering work related to the renovations of the Winder Fire Department Station 1 (for which $6,000 had previously been approved).

Two event permits from the Downtown Development Authority were approved: one for the Downtown Spooktacular on Friday, Oct. 31 at the Jug Tavern Park and Pavilion, and the other for the encore concert for the Downtown Winder LIVE! Music Series on Friday, Oct. 10 at the gazebo park.

For the latter event, an alcoholic beverage license application was also approved, so that attendees may consume beer and/or wine in public (within the gazebo area) and from open containers between the hours of 7 and 9 p.m. on that date.
