After several months of discussion about how to improve parking in downtown Winder, the Downtown Development Authority voted Tuesday to propose to the City an idea about parking on Candler Street.

In the City’s next Planning Committee meeting, DDA Chairman Chris Maddox will propose the idea of repainting the existent angled parking spaces on one side of Candler Street, between Broad Street and Woodlawn Avenue.

In June’s DDA meeting, a subcommittee was formed to address downtown parking, with DDA member Mike Rice as the chairman.

The subcommittee was charged with examining the topics of public parking, merchant parking and signage for designated lots.

Rice said in Tuesday’s DDA meeting that there had been talk of making both sides of Candler Street into parallel parking, as opposed to the one side that is now parallel and the other that has angled spaces. He disagreed with this talk, saying that would eliminate too many parking spaces from the angled side.

"It would kill that street," Rice said.

Winder Councilman and DDA member Larry Evans said the problem with the current angled spaces on the one side of Candler is that it is too difficult for two vehicles to come through the street.

Evans suggested the idea of repainting the angled spaces to be at more of a slant, which would both solve the vehicle space problem and eliminate only one parking space rather than the several that parallel parking would eliminate.

The DDA unanimously voted for this idea to be proposed to the City.

Rice also said in Tuesday’s meeting that two-hour public parking in all of the DDA’s area downtown should be enforced, and Maddox said that should include enforcing designated areas for employee and merchant parking.
