Barrow Schools see steady rise in enrollment

POSTED: June 8, 2014 12:00 p.m.

The Barrow County School System continues to add students.

The final enrollment numbers released at Tuesday’s board meeting show the district adding 1.4 percent enrollment from the final day of the 2012-2013 school year.

On the 170th day of school this year there were 13,244 enrolled students. On the last day of school the year prior (the 160th day) there were 13,065.

Since the final day of the 2009-2010 school year the district has added 888 students.

The level of growth is a good sign for district leaders.

"From our perspective the consistent growth is very positive," said Barrow superintendent Chris McMichael. "So much of what we do in terms of planning and budgeting is centered around future projections having this kind of stable growth pattern is very helpful."

The elementary schools saw the biggest gains from year-to-year in terms of final enrollment numbers, jumping to 6,815 students from 6,652.

Middle schools and high schools added students as well, with the four middle schools rising from 2,815 students to 2,880 and the high schools from 3,433 to 3,487.

The largest elementary school as of the final day count for 2013-2014 is Holsenbeck with 959 students; the smallest Bramlett with 742.

Russell Middle, which will be in a new building in a couple of years according to the current plan, is the largest middle school at 766, with Westside smallest at 676.

Winder-Barrow High is the largest of the high schools with 1,742 students. Apalachee High has 1,555 and Snodon Preparatory School continues its growth with 190 students, up from 176 at the end of last year.

The Alternative school finished the year with 62 students, down three from the year prior.
