Winder-Barrow High School Football starts practice on Monday August 4th. The Bulldoggs are looking forward to an exciting upcoming season under new Head Football Coach Ben Corley.
Corley takes over for Brian Allison who went back to Union County as head football Coach. Corley had been the assistant head football coach and defensive coordinator for the Bulldoggs before being named as the new head man.
Corley says," As far as summer workouts, I have been been very pleased. The participation has been outstanding."
They have a scrimmage on Friday August 22 at Flowery Branch High School and the game will start at 7:00 p.m. The football team has been having summer workouts all this week at Jefferson High School.
Corley says," It gives the players the opportunity to workout with some other players besides their teammates."
When you look at the 2008 edition of the Bulldoggs you have to start with senior and two year starter Greg Dixon. He will play an important role in the new offense. Dixon has a reputation for playing well in close games.
In the opening game last season, in the Battle of Barrow Dixon scored on a one yard plunge with a 1:41 left as the Bulldoggs came from behind to beat Apalachee 12-8.
Then in the final game of the season Dixon threw a 37 yard touchdown pass to Taylor Bradberry with 18 seconds to go in the game as they beat Alcovey for the second time in the season 17-10.
Corley says," Dixon is a good quarterback but on defense he is also a outstanding linebacker."
Winder-Barrow lost their top receiver in Taylor Bradberry but Chris Wragge, Taylor Hinshaw, and Terrell Evans all do a good job." Corley says." We start practice on Monday August 4th and we do not have our first game till Friday September 5th at Madison County so we will get a lot of practice time in and we have our first home game September 12th against Cedar Shoals."
Winder-Barrow High School will host a youth football camp starting Monday. Corley says," I am really excited about this as it is for upcoming 1st graders thru 8th graders. It will start Monday July 28 and run for four days ending on Thursday July 31. It will be at the school and will give us the opportunity to work with future Bulldoggs."
