Fort Yargo State Park will be closed Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 6-7, 2009, for the second quota deer hunt of this hunting season.
For Fort Yargo State Park Manager Eric Bentley, the hunt will provide additional informatoin to be analyzed before a late January session at which future hunts on state park property will be discussed.
"We’ll be waiting for the second hunt so the scientists can look at the numbers of wildlife and give us some insight into whether we should skip a year, continue to have two hunts a year or scale back to one hunt," said Bentley.
For the early December hunt, 23 does were harvested and some large bucks were seen although the hunters couldn’t take aim since they have not yet taken their required doe first, Bentley noted.
"There are still deer but we are trying to find the perfect balance," said Bentley, referring to the need to keep the deer population under control but still have deer on the park for visitors to see.
Fort Yargo’s proximity between the Highway 81 and Highway 11 corridors gives deer a great habitat but the highways present a potential hazard when deer venture into the busy highways.
Between 2005-07, 36 accidents involving deer were logged on Highway 11 and 33 occured on Highway 81.
Because of clearing of land for a new subdivision across Highway 81, Bentley said the deer habitat has been affected.
"The deer have been displaced," he said.
