Most days are still solidly in the 90’s, and local high school kids don’t report back for two weeks. But as far as the Bulldoggs football team is concerned, school is back in session.
“Like I told my coaches, the summer’s over,” said WBHS Head Coach David Wagner.
Next week teachers and administrators return, and Coach Wagner and his assistants will be giving the team more lessons in the Wing-T and 4-3 defense.
When school starts for the kids on Aug. 2, the Bulldoggs will be back in pads and doing things they haven’t been able to do for a while, namely hitting.
“I think we’ll see a much more confident team than the one we saw in spring training (the last time the team had full pads),” Wagner said.
Until then the players practiced receiving punts, throwing the ball and just about anything else they could.
Part of the goal for this week is conditioning, and the players, helmets on, ran and high-kneed up and down the field to start the second practice of the day on Tuesday.
It’s still in the 90’s, its still summertime and school hasn’t arrived yet, but Wagner and his new football team are preparing as much as possible for the fall.
