The Winder-Barrow boys and girls golf teams were ready to begin competing on Thursday at Cherokee Run golf course against Rockdale.
The weather wasn’t ready for them, as the golf match became one of many high school sporting event casualties late in the week.
"The weather has not been cooperative," said boys Head Coach Eli Connell.
Since the weather wouldn’t cooperate, the Bulldoggs will now start their season Tuesday against Clarke Central at Jennings Mill Country Club.
Connell, for one, is ready to start the new season, because last year his boys team fell just short of a top-four spot in the region, which was the goal they had set for themselves.
This year the coach returns nearly all of his players except for last year’s No. 1 golfer, Greg Dixon, who graduated last May.
There are no seniors in the program, so Dixon’s shoes have been filled by junior Justin Donaldson.
"Justin’s playing really well," Connell said. "We expect big things from him."
Donaldson will not be able to do it alone, especially since four scores count at each match, so he will have help from fellow juniors Cole Bentley and Taylor Chapman.
Three sophomores will be in the mix as well: Michael Nerroth, Zach Martin and Jon Reese Fortson.
Connell also has five freshmen in the program, and his hope is that some of them will be able to make an impact by the time the year is over. The freshmen are: Josh Calihan, Jimmy Mehrhoff, Zac Landress, CJ Lassiter and Kenny Lattimore.
The team is young this year, but Connell can see the downside and the upside that comes with a lack of seniors.
"That’s a little bit of a challenge to not have seniors. You’re missing a little bit of maturity level that the older kids bring," Connell said. "But I was prepared this year. I was aware that I would not have any seniors. And It’s a good opportunity for the juniors to learn leadership."
