opportunities in her fundraising plan as she participates again this year in Dancing with Athens Stars.
Voting is under way for the third annual Dancing with Athens Stars, a fundraiser for Project Safe set for March 21, and award-winning chef Hugh Acheson and Cox, his instructor, are in first place. Each vote is $1 contributed to Project Safe (i.e. $50 equals 50 votes). Voting continues through the last intermission of the show.
Cox, who is an attorney with the law firm of Strickland, Chesnutt and Lindsay, is also teaching her eighth session of Ballroom Dance classes at the Winder Cultural Arts Center. The classes – featuring East Coast Swing and Salsa/Merengue – got under way Feb. 4. She also instructs in Athens and is teaching a law-related class this semester on the University of Georgia campus.
"When I found out that I was paired with Hugh Acheson for Project Safe’s Dancing with Athens Stars 2010," Cox said, "I was excited about one thing – Food!"
When it came to brainstorming about how to make the most of the lucky situation of being paired with Acheson, Chef/Partner of Five & Ten, The National and Gosford Wine, Cox and her management staff cooked up some great ideas – cooking classes being offered by favorite area professional and amateur chefs.
Acheson is presenting the Feb. 11 class at 6 p.m., covering a carrot, beet and feta salad with cumin vinaigrette, as well as his famous Frogmore stew.
The cooking classes will be one-and-half to two-hour intimate kitchen demonstration classes for 10-12 guests. Not only will you get to watch these chefs in action, sample their creations and learn prized skills, techniques and secrets, but you’ll have recipes to bring back to your own kitchen to share later with friends and family.
A donation to Project Safe is requested for attending. There is no minimum or maximum donation.
To reserve your space, e-mail nataliegcox@gmail.com, indicating which class you would like to take and contact information.
Peter Dale, Chef/Partner at The National will teach a Latin-themed class, featuring Ecuadorian-style shrimp ceviche, fried green plantains and crispy braised pork with aji sauce, on Feb. 18.
Shae Rehmel, Pastry Chef at Five & Ten in Athens, will feature three French Pastry doughs at her Feb. 28 class, set for 2 p.m. Pâte Brisée, Pâte Sucrée and Sablée with technique, methods and tasting samples of all three recipes will be presented.
Athens CPA Angela Meltzer, best known for her cooking and crunching numbers, will offer her class Sunday, March 7, at 2 p.m. She will teach "A Chinese Banquet in Your Own Kitchen" featuring soups, appetizers, main course and dessert.
About Project Safe
Project Safe is a 501c3 non profit organization working to end domestic violence through prevention and educational programs, crisis intervention and ongoing supportive services for survivors of domestic violence and their children, and advocacy work in our community. Founded in Athens, first as a network of safe houses, and later as a confidentially located emergency shelter and hotline, Project Safe has expanded over the years to better meet the needs of those seeking to put the pain and horror of abuse behind them. Today, services range from short-term crisis counseling on the hotline to long-term support through Follow Up and Transitional Housing programs.
