There certainly isn’t a ball hog on the Bulldoggs.
Five players scored in double figures as Winder-Barrow overwhelmed Region 8-AAAA North opponent Habersham Central 67-46 Friday night at the Dogghouse.
Junior guard Qua Flanigan set the tempo early. He hit two three-pointers in the first quarter to put WBHS ahead 3-2 and, later, 13-12.
Flanigan finished with 12 points on four treys.
Winder-Barrow never let go of the 13-12 lead they gained after Flanigan’s three late in the first quarter.
Butler led the team with 17 points and seven rebounds; 12 of his points were in the second half.
Senior Trent Demeritte added 14 points, Jamias Davis dropped 11 and Alonzo Nelson-Ododa finished with 12.
It’s fitting that on senior night it was senior guard Nick Grovogel, who is not often on the court, who scored the Doggs final point on a free throw.
“That was great to see Nick score,” said WBHS Head Coach David Sokol. “Nick works hard, just like the other seniors.”
In Friday’s game the seniors accumulated nearly half of the total points, but there is another reason why they will be missed.
“They bought in to what we were trying to do,” Sokol, who is in his first year with WBHS, said. “From them it translated with the rest of the guys.”
The seniors will be more valuable than ever in the coming weeks as Winder-Barrow prepares for the postseason.
First, however, is a Friday date with county rival Apalachee at the Dogghouse and a Tuesday game at Cedar Shoals.
