Americans to make a change

"Watch out, America is moving to the right and it’s happening fast," said Bill O’Reilly in his latest article titled, "The Right Stuff."

In an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, President Obama said the reason Scott Brown won the Senate seat in Massachusetts was the same anger that the voters had shown in sweeping Obama into office. He said it was because of the policies of the eight years prior to his Presidency.

As I listened to that interview, I tried to understand exactly what I was hearing President Obama say. According to the President’s response in the Stephanopoulos interview, he believes that Scott Brown, the Senator-Elect from Massachusetts, won the election because the people in Massachusetts are angry with the policies of former President George W. Bush. We are 13 months away from the George W. Bush administration. We have watched the current administration make a hard left turn away from the policies of the Bush administration, and yet, according to President Obama, the people are so angry that they swept a man into office in Massachusetts who openly campaigned against the policies of the current administration.

Something does not fit. The dots do not connect in a logical manner. President Obama had campaigned for the other candidate in Massachusetts, making sure those who would vote for Brown should understand they would be voting against the stated goals and dreams of the Obama Administration. With the first State of the Union speech before a joint session of Congress still visible in our rearview mirror, many people were waiting to see if there would be a change in the way this administration governs. A friend (Jimmy Orr) for whom I hold the highest respect and appreciation sent me a note this week to summarize the State of the Union speech with these words: "Nothing’s changed." With the general public speaking out as never before and with members of Congress beginning to push back on some items on President Obama’s agenda there seems to be a mindset that says the people just simply do not understand how much they are going to be helped by double-digit unemployment, larger government involvement in their lives and nationalized health care. It is true I am having trouble understanding how the current direction of the country is going to be good for us in the long run.

It is true that many people in our nation are sure that the government owes them health care and that the government’s job is to assure they are taken care of from the cradle to the grave. Since the State of the Union speech, several people have reminded me that President Obama said he was going to create more jobs and put in place a spending freeze. The so-called freeze which is only a portion of the discretionary budget, according to the Cato Institute, will mean that 83 percent of the budget will be off-limits to the freeze.

The freeze does not take place until 2011, which adds to the concern that many people have that the freeze will be too little too late.

There is a promise of a new "stimulus plan," which continues to support the concept that once a country is broke, just keep throwing money we don’t have at the problem, and somehow it will work out.

We know from much experience that government stimulus does not work. We do know, however, that tax cuts work. We do know that when people have more of their money in their pocket they will invest and retool their businesses that will always bring more money into the coffers of government. That small effect never makes sense to those who are convinced beyond changing, that capitalism is wrong and that the only solution is the socialist ideology.

What is being missed by the current advisors and leaders in Washington is that the American people have awakened and they are going to make sure that the direction the country is headed is changed. The American public is now beginning to listen to the campaign promises of candidates, and once they are in office, insisting that the office holder stay true to the promises made on the campaign trail.

From where I stand, this is a new twist for many who serve in office currently, and will come as a surprise to them that after this next election they will no longer be in office. This fight must be settled at the ballot box this year.
