Come tournament time, accomplishments in the regular season don’t mean much when one game determines if you advance or go home.

The Winder-Barrow Middle School Bullpups entered the tournament just 5-7 on the year, needing to win a play-in game just to reach the first round.

They haven’t played like a team with a losing record this week.

Monday the No. 4-seeded Bullpups handled No. 5 Kings Bridge at home 42-23.

Tuesday Winder-Barrow overcame a much bigger test; they upset the top-ranked Huskies at Westside Middle School 59-58 in overtime.

It was only the Huskies second loss of the season; it was also season ending.

“We just have to take the opportunity we’ve got,” said WBMS Head Coach Corey Sims after winning the play-in game.

They’ll need their three stars to continue to score if they want to grab their next opportunity, 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at No. 3 Malcolm Bridge in the second round.

Forward Markesio Anderson has been the leading scorer in the postseason. He netted 13 against Kings Bridge, before erupting for 25 to help defeat Westside.

Guard TJ Jackson has been consistent for the Pups, scoring 13 points in each contest.

Christian Hodge was held to just seven in the play-in game, but he added 18 in the first round in the upset win.

The No. 2-seeded Winder-Barrow girls hosted the only other first round game in Barrow County, although they were upset 25-23 to county rivals and No. 3-seed Haymon-Morris Tuesday night.
