Winder-Barrow High School will finally get to hold its third Wall of Fame ceremonies Saturday when the Bulldoggs host cross-county rival Apalachee in a subregion 8-AAAA North game at the Dogghouse, Winder-Barrow’s gym or North Fifth Avenue.
The induction of the third class of Wall of Famers was postponed from Jan. 8 when snow and icy road conditions forced both schools to close.
The ceremonies will be held during halftime of the boys’ game, which should begin around 7:30 p.m. Tipoff for the earlier girls’ game will be at 6 p.m.
Winder-Barrow will induct 10 new members to the Wall of Fame this year, including Jason Austin, John Dean, Elihue Foskey, Shane Maxwell, Willis (Doodle) McDonald, Judge T. Penn McWhorter, Tim Reynolds, J.R. Sims, Mike Steele and Billy Ray White Sr.
Those 10 were voted in by the Wall of Fame committee from 21 candidates who were nominated, including 13 first-time nominees and eight nominees who remained from the previous year’s ballot.
Nominees who do not receive enough votes to make the Wall of Fame remain on the ballot for a total of three years. Any who do not get elected after three years may be re-nominated.
Last year’s selections were Kenny Cooper, Mike Maxey, Bob Dixon, Billy Ted McDaniel, Mandy Smith Lipscomb, Raymond Reynolds, Kenneth (Kinky) Roberts, Philly Jones and Tim Barnette.
The original Wall of Fame class included Sonny Morris, Mike Newell, Mike Sullivan, Daphne Lee, Sammy Hale, Latasha Rogers, Stoney Byrd, Hiawatha Berry, Lynn Berry, Shane Haney, Bruce Brown, Shawn McNally, Jason Irwin, Tara Pierce, Shane Hopper, Don Townley, Stan Simmons, Crystal Holland, Drake Bernstein, Brittany Holland and coaches Phil Jones and Cook Holliday.
Nomination forms may be obtained at Winder-Barrow High School or by contacting athletics director Justin Grant, committee chairman Jerrie Hulsey or any committee member. Nominations may be made at any time and are encouraged from anyone in the community.
