That’s the word that made Gable Peacock, a fourth-grade student from Statham Elementary, the winner of the Barrow County Spelling Bee after 21 rounds of competition. The Spelling Bee took place Monday morning in the Professional Development Center.

Peacock will move on to the District 3 Spelling Bee Feb. 27 at North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee.

Emily Bailey, a fifth-grade student from Yargo Elementary, is the runner-up for Barrow County. She and Peacock went one-on-one for eight rounds before the winner was decided, and Bailey will represent Barrow County in District 3 should Peacock be unable to compete.

Other participants included Jennifer Rogers from Auburn Elementary, Ann Dominguez from Bethlehem Elementary, Katie Burkholder from Bramlett Elementary, Adrianna Ledford from County Line Elementary and Chase Williams from Holsenbeck Elementary.

Also, Kate Thompson from Kennedy Elementary, Rebecca Taylor from Haymon-Morris Middle School, Cynthia Kladitis from Russell Middle, Kaitlyn Ellington from Westside Middle and Rosie Parker from Winder-Barrow Middle School.

Each participant is the 2010 Spelling Bee Champion at their respective school.

"Words like ‘circuitous,’ ‘aggrandizement’ and ‘latitudinarian’ didn’t slow down this group of top spellers," said Jan Masingill, Elementary Curriculum Coordinator for Barrow County Schools.

"I have been Barrow County Schools’ Spelling Bee Coordinator for the past five years and this was the most competitive and exciting Bee we’ve seen.

"These students would not be competing at this level without the support of great teachers, administrators and parents," said Masingill. "We are all so proud to be a part of this wonderful event showcasing our students’ outstanding academic achievement."

The Spelling Bee was sponsored by the Georgia Association of Educators and the Barrow County Association of Educators.

"The Barrow County Association of Educators is proud to sponsor the Spelling Bee every year," said Nelson Strubbe, who is the counselor at Bethlehem Elementary School.

"Our students were challenged with more difficult words this year and their performance was outstanding," said Strubbe.
