Bulldoggs senior Trent Demeritte signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play wide receiver for Savannah State University.

Last Fall Demeritte tallied more than 1,000 yards receiving and quickly drew the interest of colleges.

"When he showed off against Flowery Branch in our scrimmage game he put himself on the map," said former Winder-Barrow Head football coach Ben Corley, who coached Demeritte the past two seasons.

"I think he's going to be a steal for Savannah State and he could be a star."

Demeritte didn't have to deliberate too much on his college choice. He only really looked at Savannah State and Valdosta State, but after his visited to Savannah last Thursday he had made up his mind.

The harder decision might have been the sport he would play in college.

As a starting guard for the Bulldoggs basketball team he has averaged more than 10 points-per-game, including a 26 point outing Tuesday night in a loss to Clarke Central.

"I've been wanting to play college basketball all my life," Demeritte said. "But the football opportunity came first."

That doesn't mean that he won't try out being a two-sport athlete.

"I'm going to try my best to balance two sports and school."

But even if Demeritte commits solely to the gridiron in college, he still has a few games left to play high school basketball as the Doggs work toward the postseason.
