The AMVETS Post 12 approached the City of Auburn at last week’s business meeting to discuss the possibility of creating a memorial to honor those who have served in the U.S. military.
Michelle and Joe Walker spoke to Auburn Mayor Linda Blechinger and the city council about the idea of creating a memorial with a lot of visibility.
Michelle Walker said that because of Auburn’s ongoing downtown renovations that the city might be a good place to consider placing a memorial, which would not only honor the fallen but those who have served in the military.
The concept of the memorial would be "Tears of the Fallen," she said, and would include an obelisk with a flag draped over it in addition to a water feature.
In order to create the memorial, Walker said, a proposal would be sent to local art schools, high schools and artists, who would come up with potential designs and information about the cost of such an endeavor.
The AMVETS also would do fundraising for the memorial, Walker told the council.
Walker said that the memorial could be used to celebrate Memorial and Veterans Days.
Blechinger told Walker that she was impressed with the veterans "passion and desire" to create a memorial.
The AMVETS Post 12 is the only AMVETS organization in the county and is open to those who served in any branch of the military. For more information on Post 12, visit the website www.amvetspost12.com.
The council also discussed adding two greenhouses that had been gifted to the city to the community garden area, so that farmers could grow and propagate plants and flowers annually.
Local clothing collection boxes also were discussed. The boxes, outside the Auburn Ingles, have had items that are not clothing — like sofas — deposited beside them, which can be an eyesore for the community. The council discussed possibly getting weekend pickups.
