AARP TaxAide getting under way this Monday

AARP TaxAide will begin helping Low to Moderate income Taxpayers complete their State and Federal Income Tax Returns on Monday, Feb. 1, at the Barrow County Leisure Services Center at 175 Second St., in Winder.

AARP TaxAide will continue each Monday and Tuesday through April 13. Times are 9 a.m. to noon.

Coordinator Jim Crews said he has a staff of seven well-trained TaxAide counselors ready to join him for this year’s assistance to taxpayers.

Taxpayers should bring with them last year’s Tax Return, photo ID (such as a drivers license), their Social Security Cards for themselves and all dependents, all current year tax documents: (such as Form SSA-1099, W2’s, and 1099 forms), and any correspondence received from the IRS or State DOR since last year.

Taxpayers should remember that in the first three or four weeks that there is a longer wait time at the site and plan accordingly.

The IRS has allowed some providers of Form 1099’s to delay delivery of these forms until March 15 this year. Those Taxpayers should wait until all 1099’s have been received before bringing their papers to the site.

The IRS is again this year requiring an "Intake Document" be completed and signed by all Taxpayers. This Form will be among the first steps required at the site. This form will be used in preparing the Tax Return and then returned to the Taxpayer for your records.

TaxAide will retain no Taxpayer documents.

Also onsite with TaxAide will be a trained Benefits Outreach volunteer who will conduct a screening to assess a person’s eligibility for benefit. Participants will receive a printout of benefits and services which may be available to them.
