BRASELTON – Residents in Barrow County eventually could have another restaurant to choose from when dining out.
The Braselton Planning Commission granted Century Gateway, LLC a conditional use permit to develop a drive-in restaurant in Barrow County at its meeting Monday.
The proposed site is located on 1.5 acres at the corner of Beaver Dam Road and Highway 211 and just south of Interstate 85. It is located in Braselton’s Highway 211 overlay district and is zoned general commercial.
The site is part of a larger development, Century Gateway and Century Center at Braselton, which has been billed as a retail and office development park.
Gray Properties, a developmental group based in Buford, is developing both projects.
Dick Gray, a managing partner with Gray Properties, said due to the site’s location and the town’s Highway 211 overlay code, a conditional use permit is needed to build a drive-in restaurant even though the property is zoned general commercial.
"What we’re trying to do is level the playing field on our property," he said. "We cannot compete with other properties on the north side and the south side that are not subject to this limitation."
Gray said a number of potential tenants have shown interest in the site, but some won’t consider the property unless it’s zoned correctly.
Kevin Keller, Braselton’s planning and development director, also recommended approval with the condition that the developers seek final review and approval of their site plan from the town’s mayor and council. The planning commission also recommended this condition.
The Braselton Town Council plans to vote on the commission’s recommendation during its February meeting. The council’s work session will be Feb. 4 at 4 p.m. and its Feb. 8 meeting will be at 7 p.m. The council meets in the Braselton Police and Municipal Court Building, located on Highway 53.
