CONYERS — Shannon McConnell, Ethan Smith and Blake Davis led their respective Apalachee High School cross country teams in Saturday’s Region 8-AAAA meet at the Georgia International Horse Park.
Running in light rain and extremely wet conditions, McConnell placed 14th in the varsity girls’ race, Smith was 18th in the varsity boys’ race and Davis was 10th in the JV boys’ contest. Afua Owusu-Ansah was the only Wildcat runner to compete in the JV girls’ race.
McConnell, a sophomore, was timed in 23 minutes, 19 seconds to help the Lady Wildcats to a seventh-place finish in the varsity girls’ race.
Smith ran the course in 18:59 to lead the Wildcats to a sixth-place team finish, while Davis was clocked in 20:35 to pace the JV ‘Cats to a fourth-place team finish.
Apalachee girls figuring in the team scoring behind McConnell were Andrea Cardona, who finished 29th in 25:38; Avery Alfonso, 34th in 26:22; Miranda Stapleton, 44th in 27:53; and Leehang Xiong, 52nd in 29:39.
The Wildcats’ other two finishers were Amy Kelley, 58th in 31:41, and Hlee Xiong, 59th in 32:08.
Smith was supported by Brandon Craig, who placed 20th in 19:07; Andy Moua, who was 33rd in 19:59; Mark Engle, 37th in 20:06; and Stephen Sassano, 39th in 20:19.
John Meyne placed 40th in 20:21 and Eric Phetvixay was 61st in 22:20 to round out the Wildcats’ contingent.
Behind Davis in the boys’ JV race were Cesar Saucedo, 18th in 21:55; Michael Sproles, 25th in 22:22; Anthony Hawkins, 32nd in 22:53; and Timur Cetindag, 42nd in 23:23.
Rounding out the Wildcats’ JV finishers were Tyler Priest, 47th in 23:48; Billy Bredow, 52nd in 24:57; Zack Kent, 59th in 26:26; John Reiner, 60th in 26:26; Joey Sandlin, 67th in 28:07; Austin Yang, 69th in 29:10; Pheng Vue, 70th in 30:05; Sang Vue, 71st in 31:38; and Andrew Yang, 73rd in 33:30.
Owusu-Ansah was timed in 33:52 as she placed 32nd in the JV girls’ race.
Apalachee’s varsity girls scored 155 points to finish behind Winder-Barrow, 17; Loganville, 83; Habersham Central, 103; Heritage, 111; Clarke Central, 113; and Cedar Shoals, 139.
The Wildcat varsity boys had 147 points to trail Winder-Barrow with 42; Habersham Central, 51; Heritage, 85; Loganville, 122; and Clarke Central, 143. They finished ahead of Monroe Area, 192; Madison County, 212; Cedar Shoals, 221; Salem, 271; and Rockdale County, 324.
Only five teams scored in the JV boys’ race, with Heritage leading the way with 43, followed by Habersham Central with 46, Clarke Central with 66, Apalachee with 92 and Loganville with 121.
The top four teams in each varsity race qualified for Saturday’s state meet in Carrollton along with any top 10 individual finishers who were not on the top four teams. Those finishers will compete at the state meet as individuals only and will not figure in the team scoring.
