The fourth annual Beans, Bears & Bandaids promises to be an event three times the size of those of the past.

Slated for Thursday, Oct. 29, from 4-7 p.m. at the Barrow County Recreation Center in Winder, the Barrow County Family Connection/ Communities In Schools Inc., will host the event that is open to the public and jam-packed with health and human resources information, great food and the opportunity to help those in need.

In an effort to create awareness of community resources, the event will provide free health screenings such as blood pressure checks, free screening for sleep disorders, bio energetic health testing, vision and dental screenings for children, free child identification kits by GA CHIPS and free flu shots for those 15 and older and pending availability, encourage success in school through drop-out prevention and participation in the Performance Learning Center and promote the efforts of Holiday Connection – the county-wide support system for assistance to families.

Holiday Connection will coordinate the community’s effort to assist families throughout the county during the holiday season by providing toys for local children.

In addition to the Health and Human Resources Fair that offers free information on services provided by non-profit organizations and the school system, there are a number of free health screenings.

Companies and organizations will participate in a fun, competitive chili cook-off that provides categories for a Best Tasting Chili trophy and People’s Choice and Best Presentation Awards. Attendees are invited to pay $5 for a taste of each chili entered in the contest, dessert and a drink. Bring a new toy for infants through children 18 years of age and receive four free chili tasting tickets.

Sponsors include Barrow Regional Medical Center and Rhodia.

So far this year there are 11 chili teams from the community, including FireLine, last year’s Best Tastin’ Chili Winner, Rhodia, Winder Housing Authority, The Tree House, American Cancer Society, Piedmont Regional Library, The City of Winder, The City of Auburn, The Barrow County Performance Learning Center, Barrow Regional Medical Center and the Airport Authority.
