Qualifying for municipal races arrives next week

Candidates in city races on the Nov. 3 ballots will be officially qualifying to seek election next week.

Expiring council seats in Auburn, Bethlehem, Carl, Statham, Winder and Hoschton and Braselton will be determined during the Nov. 3 elections in those municipalities. In Carl, Hoschton and Braselton, the mayor’s race will also be on the ballot.

For the first time, Barrow County Office of Elections & Registration will be handling the polls on election day for the cities of Auburn and Winder. Qualifying and voter registration is still being handled by the municipalities.

The General Election will be held on Nov. 3, with polls open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Qualifying fees are generally 3 percent of the compensation of the position.

In Carl, qualifying for Council Posts 1 and 2, currently held by Charles Wagner and Jason Jones respectively, will be held at Carl City Hall beginning Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 9 a.m. Qualifying, with Clerk Danielle Chatham, will close Thursday, Sept. 3, at 5 p.m. Carl City Hall, located at 1690 Carl-Bethlehem Road will be open for qualifying Sept. 1-3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The qualifying fee for Carl Mayor, the post currently held by David Brock, is $38. The council post qualifying fee is $21.60.

In the City of Winder, qualifying starts Monday, Aug. 31, and goes through Friday, Sept. 4, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily at Winder City Hall.

The qualifying fee is $72 for the three council seats to be filled in the Nov. 3 election.

Council Ward 1 is currently held by Sonny Morris; the at-large seat is currently held by Mike Mingus, and Ward 3 is currently held by JR Parrish.

In Auburn, the two council positions up for election are those currently held by Sally Brown and Donna Scouten. Qualifying times and dates will be Aug. 31 through Sept. 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Auburn City Hall.

In Bethlehem, qualifying for three council seats currently held by Beth Buchanan, Larry Jones and Jeff Longino will be Sept. 2-4 from 1-5 p.m.

In Statham, three council seats, currently held by Edna Jackson, Betty Lyle, and Gayle Steed, will be on the ballot, and qualifying for the posts will be Aug. 31 starting at 8:30 a.m. to Sept. 4.

Statham City Clerk Susan Gabriel will be on hand for qualifying Monday, Aug. 31, until 5 p.m. and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 1-3, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, Sept. 4, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

In Braselton, the mayor’s position and two council seats, District 2 and 4, will be up for election. Mayor Pat Graham is seeking election to the 47th State Senate seat. Qualifying in Braselton will be Aug. 31 to Sept. 2.

District 2 is currently held by Ralph Richardson Jr., who has indicated he’ll run for the mayor’s post, and District 4 is held by Dudley Ray.

Qualifying will begin at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 31 and close out at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 2 at Braselton Town Hall. Mayorial candidates will pay a $156 qualifying fee, and those interested in the council positions will pay $36 to qualify.

In Hoschton, the position of mayor and three council seats will be on the Nov. 3 ballot. Qualifying for those positions will be conducted Aug. 31 to Sept. 2.

Hoschton’s current mayor Bill Copenhaver has announced he will not seek re-election, and Councilman Jim Jester, in the Post 2 seat, has indicated he will seek that post.

In addition to the mayor’s seat, city council posts 1, 2 and 3, held by Richard Green, Jester and John Schulte, respectively, will be on the ballot.

Qualifying lasts from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 31-Sept. 2 at Hoschton City Hall.

Oct. 5 is the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 3 elections.
