Osborn swims to four personal record times for Barracudas

As has been the case at every meet this season for the Winder YMCA Barracudas, the goal for coach Karen Murphy has been to see swimmers improve their times.

Thursday night at Jefferson in a tri-meet with the Sea Dragons and Green Acres from Athens, Paige Osborn was one of the latest Barracudas to shine, setting four personal records.

Her biggest improvement was in the 50-yard breaststroke, where she finished in 41.12 seconds, 2.04 seconds better than her previous mark.

A whopping 13 of her teammates set three or more personal records. Seven-year-old Patrick Sorah shaved more than ten seconds off his time in three strokes, while Rachel Rogojan, Brendon Veal, Savannah Walser, Madelyn Wood, Daniel and Joe Allen (Joe set four personal bests), David Bach, Ceylan Cetindag, Amber Duffy, Anthony Jewell and Riley Lewis all set personal trifectas.

Murphy said that while several swimmers swam times that would qualify them for All-Star status with the North Georgia Swim League, the status won’t be recognized by the league because the meet was a dual and was not scored with certified timers.

Saturday’s certified meet in Dacula was an opportunity for some novice swimmers to have the spotlight. Murphy said that swimmers who competed in the pentathlon two weeks ago weren’t eligible to swim in the Dacula meet, so only 45 swimmers competed for Winder.

The Barracudas are already winding their season down. After Saturday, they have just two more dual meets – including Wednesday, July 8 at home against Dacula – before the district meet in Habersham County. The district meet will be July 11, followed by the league championships the next weekend and the state meet the weekend after.
