Coming on the heels of being named the Southeastern Conference female athlete of the year, Georgia's Courtney Kupets has been nominated for the prestigious ESPY Award for the best college female athlete of the year.
Kupets joined Florida quarterback Tim Tebow in recognition from the conference. Tebow, who led the Gators to their second national title in three years, was the SEC's male athlete of the year.
The ESPYs are presented annually by ESPN, with the proceeds going to the V Foundation for cancer research in memory of the late North Carolina State's men's basketball coach Jimmy Valvano.
Kupets was nominated along with Notre Dame's Kerri Hanks (soccer), Washington's Danielle Lawrie (softball), Connecticut's Maya Moore (basketball) and California's Dana Vollmer (swimming) for the ESPY.
Thus far for her senior year Kupets has garnered the Honda-Broderick Cup as the top collegiate female athlete of the year, SEC athlete of the year, as well as the AAI National, NCAA Southeast Regional and SEC Gymnast of the Year.
In her collegiate career, she has won nine individual event titles (four in 2009), three NCAA all-around championships and 15 All-American nods. Her career has provided her with the esteemed honor of having been a part of Georgia's national championship team every year as they won five consecutive NCAA titles, despite fighting through a torn Achilles tendon throughout her career. She also owns a silver medal from her trip to Athens, Greece for the 2004 Summer Olympics.
