Winder’s minor and major league Dixie Youth baseball teams were just looking to get some game experience from the jamboree tournament they hosted at the Lions Club baseball fields Saturday and Sunday.

While the coaches were sometimes frustrated by the time limits – games ended exactly at the 1 hour and 15 minute mark, meaning that more than one promising rally was cut off mid-inning and some games only lasted three innings – both felt their teams did achieve their primary goal.

The minor team won two games and lost one, while the majors reversed the trend, winning one of their three matchups with the All-Stars from Buford. Auburn’s minor team also played, winning all three of their games.

In the opener for the minors, Hunter Fragapane took a shutout into the fourth inning against Dacula, before Trace Clamp came in to close down Dacula for a 6-2 win. Clamp stayed on the mound to start the second game against Buford, giving way to Cameron Hayes in a 12-8 win. Cody Holland helped them out with two great defensive plays in the outfield, while Josh Smith played well in the field as well.

On Father’s Day, a five-run inning by Mill Creek in the bottom of the third spelled doom for Winder, as they lost 7-5. Dylan Rivoli got two hits for Winder, pushing his three-game total to six. Brendon Veal and Hayes also doubled.

The majors team won the middle game of their series with Buford by an 8-6 score, pushing across three in the first and then five more in the second. Brendan Brown doubled and scored leading off the game, then added a two-run single in the second. Brown also pitched in the opener, going two shutout innings in an eventual 3-2 loss.

Buford won the third game Sunday 5-4, though Winder, the designated home team, had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the fifth when the game was called due to the time limit.

For the tournament, Brown went 3-for-5 at the plate, Matt Kitchens went 4-for-6, and Joseph Formato was a perfect 5-for-5. Chris Lawson was the pitcher of record in Winder’s win, striking out six and pitching all three innings.

Auburn won the first game behind the arm of Jesse Thomason, one of three pitchers to throw complete games on the weekend. Ty Harris and Cullen Moore hit solo homers in support of Thomason’s effort in a 6-3 win over Mill Creek. Bradley Toxen pitched in the second game, a 9-6 win over Dacula, then Dustin Sexton twirled a gem in a 6-3 win over Buford on Father’s Day.
