There are plenty of tournaments for grown-ups that come to the golf courses in Barrow County.

Tuesday, it was the turn of a slew of younger golfers, as the Atlanta Junior Golf Association hosted a tournament at the Chimneys in Winder. And with top young golfers from all over the metro Atlanta area in the field, the five players with Barrow County ties more than held their own.

Thomas Whitley tied for first in the 13-14-year-old club division, firing an 8-over 80 for 18 holes. Justin Kim, an 11-year-old from Statham, competed in the 12-and-under division and shot a sizzling 74, including three birdies, to finish in second place, one stroke behind Ryan Stachler of Milton. Doug Fussell, who also golfs for Apalachee High School, carded an 85 for 18 holes, ending up in a tie for 15th.

In the nine-hole open division for golfers 12 and under, Jason Wysocki of Hoschton and Buford Middle School finished in third place with a 39, while Jaden Miller of Braselton finished with a 63.

Whitley, who resides in Hoschton, had a lead at the turn after making birdies on holes 5 and 7. However, he struggled down the stretch, double-bogeying the par-4 10th hole, then hitting bogeys on 16 and 17 to fall into the tie for first. Harrison Gaskin, with whom Whitley tied, also bogeyed three times on the back nine, but his birdie on 10 made a three-stroke difference.

Kim played a solid round, but couldn’t handle Stachler’s surge on the back nine, as Stachler made three of his four birdies in the round.

Wysocki finished one stroke off the lead, making par on six holes.  Fussell got off to a rough start, making a bogey or worse on six of the first eight holes, and sealed his fate with back-to-back doubles on 12 and 13.

Stachler had the lowest 18-hole round out of any of the four divisions, shooting a 71.
