Auburn’s softball team wasn’t the only youth squad that had to win several do-or-die games in the past week.
The Auburn Dixie Youth T-Ball team, fresh off a third-place finish in the qualifying tournament, reached the final four of the district tourney Tuesday night with a 12-11 win over North Gwinnett.
Four-year-old Zack Bowman got the game-winning hit, after Auburn came into the bottom of the fifth down 11-6 and rallied.
Auburn will play Wednesday and possibly Thursday to determine the district champion. The district tournament represents the farthest T-Ball teams can advance.
To get to their dramatic come-from-behind win over North Gwinnett, Auburn had to beat Mill Creek Monday night. They held the Hawks scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings to preserve an 8-6 win, with first baseman Jackson Street making a huge diving catch on a line drive to start a double play in the late innings. Shortstop Sammy Perry also made a pair of tough catches on pop-ups to shallow left.
Auburn had lost 16-5 to Dacula in the first round Saturday, but turned around and beat Mill Creek (a different team) 15-11 to advance.
