The incidence of domestic violence complaints are on the rise. The number of cases reported remained up again this week, said Investigator Rachel Love, who returned from a week of training to review a volume of disputes, both verbal and physical.
"In the summer heat, people who don’t have a job are spending time with alcohol and situations erupt," said Love.
In one case, investigation is under way by Officer Tracy Wild into a physical dispute in Holly Hill Mall in front of Save-A-Lot on June 19. Roommates got into a dispute when one attempted to discipline the other’s children for being disrespectful. The injured person was pushed to the ground and victim complained of neck and back injury. Emergency medical responders were called to the scene. The other party was gone when officers arrived.
Police were called to a Second Street apartment to a reported verbal domestic dispute involving Antwon Garrell Johnson. A search warrant was obtained by Investigator Greg Teatino after the odor of burning marijuana was smelled at the residence, and a small quantity of marijuana was found in the June 19 search.
Police responded to customers fighting in the parking of Pawn Mart on South Broad Street June 19. Reports show three males and a female, including cousins, were involved in a dispute in the parking lot after one of their vehicles was seen in the pawn shop lot. Having had some property stolen from their home by a family member, the other party stopped to see if their items were being pawned.
Thefts are also continuing to get attention in these economic times. Leaving valuables in an unlocked car is an open invitation to have property taken. (See the print edition for details of ongoing investigations.)
Investigator Eric Vance is pursuing leads in a sexual battery complaint in the Williamson Street area. There are possible suspects.
Referrals for services have been made the victim of a rape which is being investigated.
In an unrelated case, Valdis Antonio Starks was charged with two counts of obstruction and hindering a law enforcement officer after he ran from two officers on foot patrol.
Starks was apparently running since there were four out-of-jurisdiction warrants out for his arrest. He was wanted by Barrow County with felony warrants from Oconee County.
When Starks failed to comply with officers, a taser was used.
Also during the chase for Starks, Schonna Nichole English of a Glen Avenue address was charged with obstruction.
