Olympic Steel Nominated for Manufacturers of the Year

Atlanta, Ga. April 16, 2009 -- More than a thousand Georgia captains of industry gathered recently for the annual Georgia Manufacturing Appreciation Week awards luncheon. The winners of this year’s Manufacturer of the Year Award are: Toyo Tires of White, Ga., in the large employer category (more than 500 employees); Peachtree City’s Alcan Packaging in the medium category (151-500 employees); and Oracal, of Black Creek, in the small category (150 or fewer employees).

Barrow County’s Olympic Steel was nominated by the Barrow County Chamber of Commerce/EDC and Lanier Technical College in the small category. Olympic Steel-Southern has been in operation for 12 years at this location and operates as a metals processor and supplier to manufacturers, fabricators and construction firms throughout the Southeast. Employing 70 people, Olympic customers include names such as Bobcat, Kubota, John Deere, Komatsu, Price Industries, Royston, Ingersoll-Rand and others. Whether the customer is stamping parts from a coil or needs cut and formed parts for assembly, Olympic-Southern can provide it.

Dr. Michael Moye, President of Lanier Technical College, stated that the College was honored to have co-sponsored, along with the Barrow County Chamber of Commerce/EDC, Olympic Steel. Olympic Steel is a proud part of our Lanier Tech service area and a great community member of Barrow County.

Keynote speaker Jim Lientz, Georgia’s chief operating officer, presented the awards. He was joined by Georgia Department of Economic Development Deputy Commissioner Heidi Green and Technical College System of Georgia Commissioner Ron Jackson at the luncheon marking the culmination of Manufacturing Appreciation Week. The event was co-hosted by the Technical College System of Georgia and the Georgia Department of Economic Development as an effort to recognize and pay tribute to manufacturing’s role in Georgia’s economy. The manufacturing sector employs more than 400,000 Georgians at nearly 10,000 facilities across the state, contributing more than $100 billion to its economy annually.

This is the 15th year celebrating Manufacturing Appreciation Week in Georgia. Sponsors include AT&T; BB&T; Georgia Power; the Georgia Tech Enterprise Innovation Institute; Habif, Arogeti & Wynne; and Pattillo. The event was held at the Cobb Galleria in Atlanta.

Olympic Steel is receiving a little love from home.

The Southern office of the business — located at 509 Bankhead Highway in Winder — was recently nominated as manufacturer of the year via a local group who recognized Georgia’s captains of industry.

Lanier Technical College President Dr. Mike Moye presented a plaque to Southern Region Vice President John Brieck at the Chamber of Commerce’s monthly membership meeting.

The Southern Division of Olympic Steel offers products and processing capabilities to cover the range of flat-rolled steel needs in the southeast.

In addition to direct sales, Olympic Steel also offers toll processing, storage, material handling and delivery services.

Brieck thanked the Chamber and mentioned something that a lot of people might not know — in the days of growing environmental concern, steel is the most recycled metal.

Olympic Steel began in 1954, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. The company now has 15 facilities nationwide.

According to the Olympic Steel website, "From the start, we have focused on developing long-lasting relationships with our employees, our suppliers, and our customers. By being attentive to the principles of good business, we have succeeded in helping our customers effectively compete."
