Bulldogs, German Shepherds, Boston Terriers, Shih-Tzus, Labradors and a wide variety of other dog breeds, including mutts, sniffed and barked their way around Winder on Saturday at the Second Annual Barrow County Animal Control Dog-Gone Summer Festival.

Dogs and their owners lined Porter Street for the chance to walk the stage and be judged in the "cutest dog" contest.

Some even sported costumes for the event.

Dogs could be seen walking the street and being carried while others were pushed in strollers.

Vendors such as LymeRemedy.com were offering services. Owner Lori Durnell was taking samples of dog hair for free, to be tested for Lyme and other debilitating diseases.

Participants will receive a phone call with the results in about two weeks. Should their pup suffer from a disease, LymeRemedy offers Pet Tonic for a variety of illnesses.

There was dog jewelry, dog training and a lot of dog treats to go around.

There were also human-friendly booths with crafts, candles, kid activities such as face painting and an array of food vendors.

Boy Scout Troop 598 was cooking up funnel cakes with all proceeds going to the animal shelter and the Sit Happens Dog Training and Behavior group was available for answering questions and signing up puppies and dogs for classes in training and behavior etiquette.

Barrow County Animal Control gave 137 Rabies shots at the event and 33 animals received a micro-chip that aids in locating lost animals.
