Circuit District Attorney Brad Smith used a recent Barrow County Superior Court case to demonstrate the need for the community to be diligent about protecting victims of crime.
At Thursday’s local commemoration of the 25th anniversary of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week, Smith challenged the communities of Barrow, Banks and Jackson to do more to support the agencies working on behalf of victims – from law enforcement to Peace Place, The Tree House, Piedmont Rape Crisis Center, Juvenile Justice, Piedmont CASA and Jackson County and Barrow County Family Connection.
But it is not just those agencies, law enforcement and the courts needed to protect children; Everyone must be aware that "Stranger Danger" is usually not the answer in assaults on youngsters and teens. The perpetrators are more often than not trusted friends or relatives.
Smith contends we are not doing enough to protect children if we only have the "Good Touch, Bad Touch" program in schools and put the burden of a child’s safety on that child.
He noted the victim in the recent case did not report, keeping the secret to themselves. It was not until the perpetrator’s videotape of the assault was discovered that the victim, once challenged with the reality of the evidence, shared the horrible details.
Smith was referring to the recent sentencing in Barrow County Superior Court of Alan Richard Konwinski, who received three life sentences and 20 years to serve for rape, two counts of aggravated sodomy and sexual exploitation of a minor.
