No, "Tweeting" is not what baby chicks do on Easter. Well, maybe it is, but it’s also the latest fad in cyberspace. And by now, if you haven’t logged on to see what Twitter is all about, unless you live under a rock, you’ve at least heard someone talking about it on the news, on the radio or in person.
Even Barrow County News (BCN) now offers breaking news on Twitter, all it takes is logging onto the site for free and following the BCN profile.
Twitter seems to be the new Myspace or Facebook trend, only a fast-food version if you will.
It’s an online social networking site similar to Myspace or Facebook. It allows users to send regular updates or "Tweets" to friends, family members or anyone else in the world who logs onto Twitter and desires to "follow" the users Tweets.
Tweets are limited to 140 letters or spaces and the updates are then displayed on the Twitterer’s profile page, which also provides a space for a profile picture and brief description of who you are and what it is you do.
Senders can restrict who is able to read their Tweets within their circle of friends and have the capability to block other Twitterers they don’t want following them.
The difference between Twitter and other networking sites such as Myspace or Facebook is, simply put, convenience.
To set up a Myspace page, to some degree, can take a computer-savvy individual. All it takes to Twitter is to log in and start Tweeting.
The company has not released the number of active accounts on Twitter, however, Forrester Research, an independent market research company, estimates that Twitter has nearly five million users.
It is thought to be the third largest social networking site in the world with Facebook being the largest and Myspace coming in second.
Some complain that Twitter is a bit too narcisistic for them, with some users longing on all hours of the night, Tweeting more than 20 times a day with messages such as "eating breakfast now," "going for a run," "just got finished with work."
While others rave about the site being a great place to catch up with old friends, follow up on breaking news and even keep up with their favorite actors or musicians.
President Barack Obama has even caught on to the trend and sends Tweets about a variety of topics, including his most recent one on the economy. See at http://twitter.com/BarackObama.
There is even a new glossary of terms that describes different applications for Twitter users such as Twitter Mail, Twitpic and Twitterrific.
So, if you’re looking for a quick way to check on your circle of friends or for sure, breaking news, Twitter might be just the right answer for you.
