Charles Scott Mason, 29, of Bethlehem, has been charged with first-degree arson after deputies say he set fire to his mother’s home, located at 44 Gifton Thomas Road, on Thursday night.

Mason was already serving jail time on unrelated charges when the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office charged him with arson on Saturday.

The home suffered extensive damage from fire and water to the interior and exterior.

Mason was living at the home with his mother, Jean Mason, before the incident took place.

Investigators say there is no evidence indicating that anyone else was involved or at the home when the fire was ignited.

Mason left the home after starting the blaze and went to the Dollar General in Bethlehem, where he was picked up on shoplifting charges.

After further investigation by Sheriff’s investigators and Arson Investigators with Barrow County Fire and Emergency Services, it was determined that the fire was intentionally set by human act. The case is still active and under investigation and the motive for the arson is still under investigation.

No other information has been released at this time and will be released as it becomes available.
