Barrow County Deputies have their hands full, tending to nearly 90 incidents in the span of a week and making more than a dozen arrests.

One incident left deputies handling methamphetamine pipes and removing a homemade pipe bomb from a vehicle on Hwy. 316.

Ronnie Len Self, 41, of Auburn, was arrested after deputies pulled him over for driving 20 miles below the speed limit and having difficulty maintaining a lane. After exiting the vehicle for a field sobriety test, deputies discovered an array of wine bottles that had been turned into smoking pipes, several glass pipes that are used to smoke methamphetamine, two small plastic bags containing a substance that appeared to be ICE (methamphetamine) and a small pipe bomb.

The bomb was next to the drivers seat and was about 6 inches long and wrapped in black electrical tape, according to reports.

One end of the pipe bomb had a fuse and was sealed with wax.

After further investigation, two more pipes were discovered that were partially made.

Sheriff Jud Smith, the DOT and Barrow Fire were all on scene for the removal of the bomb and Hwy. 316 was shut down as a preventative measure.

The device was successfully removed with the use of a ballistic vest and metal ammo can and was secured at the Sheriff’s Office firing range.

Self was transported to Barrow Regional Medical Center for chemical testing and the samples will be sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for testing.

Self was then transported to the Barrow County Detention Center and charged with DUI/drugs, failure to maintain lane, impeding the flow of traffic, possession of methamphetamine and manufacturing an explosive device.
