If you’re thinking about New Year’s Resolutions already, there are plenty of Barrow County activities that will get your heart rate pumping and your muscles burning. One such activity is cycling or mountain biking and with Fort Yargo State Park in such close proximity, why not consider joining The Trail Blazers of Fort Yargo State Park (YABA).
YABA holds weekly riding events every Monday and Thursday at 6:30 p.m. The team meets at the Nature Center, unless the trails are closed due to rain or if temperatures fall below 45 degrees.
And with early nightfall, Night Riding is in full swing. Cyclists must park at the Nature Center for Night Riding since the B Area closes at sunset and bikers must be out of the park by 10 p.m. The trails stay open until 9:45 p.m.
Getting accustomed to the trails now will give cyclist the opportunity to prepare for upcoming races and cycling events.
Fort Yargo will host a Thrills in the Hills Marathon on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 8 a.m. until noon.
The half-marathon will be an off-road course that follows the park’s scenic bike trails. For more information on cost or to get signed up to compete, visit www.ditchthecity.com.
A Dirty Spokes Mountain Race is scheduled for Saturday, May 2, at 7-9 p.m. The six and 12 hour races take competitors along the trail and allows visitors to witness the action up front. For more information visit www.dirtyspokes.com.
Saturday, May 30, at 8 a.m. the park will hold a Dirty Spokes Duathlon. Participants will run first, then cycle and last, will run again. The route will be along the scenic trails of the park. For more information visit www.dirtyspokes.com.
The Siege Yargo TrailBlazer Race will be Saturday, June 20, at 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
This adventurous race will have teams of three people. Racers will paddle, run, mountain bike and face other challenges through the park.
